58. Pollen
Andres Reisinger presents Pollen, a pioneering NFT project that expands the possibilities of digital art and reflects on the concept of an artwork's evolution. Inspired by the natural processes of pollination, the project presents a new way of understanding collecting and creating art in a process that is transformative. With the introduction of a new artwork called POLLEN, Reisinger invites his Hortensia Open Edition collectors to exchange one of their pieces for an unknown new one that evolves through a process, resulting in what is defined as recombinant art.

POLLEN is an NFT airdropped to all Hortensia Open Edition holders; it is a token, an upgrading tool for Hortensias and a rare living artwork, given to collectors to use or keep in their digital wallet. POLLEN evolves the existing Hortensia through a process called pollination. Collectors can decide to pollinate and when. POLLEN changes four times during the year, following the seasons; as a consequence, the moment in which collectors decide to pollinate dictates the outcome of the pollination and specific characteristics of the evolving artwork. The Spring Pollination is currently taking place.

Each participating collector has 365 days to decide whether they want to pollinate or not. To pollinate and receive a new artwork, they need to send their Hortensia together with one POLLEN to the pollination chamber, knowing that once they receive the new artwork their Hortensia and POLLEN will be burnt. The final phase occurs when collectors act out the pollination, and thus immediately receive a brand new and evolved Hortensia artwork that they’ll be able to keep forever.

As in much of Reisinger’s work, nature guides and defines the rhythm of the artwork. In the artist’s own words “art is seasonal, art evolves like nature, art changes with nature.”
